Get Ready for Gardening in May

May is Gifts from the Garden Month. The National Gardening Association (NGA) reported that “eight out of ten U.S. households participated in one or more types of do-it-yourself indoor and outdoor lawn and garden activities last year.” Consumers need many products, such as seeds, hoes or wheelbarrows, in order to do such activities. In fact, the NGA reported that a typical household will spend $444 per year on its lawn and garden. With gardening playing such a big role in many people’s lives, May is the perfect time for businesses to show consumers how to get the most from their gardens.

Ad Campaigns/Promotion Ideas:
• Create a sponsored ad series with gardening and garden safety tips (can be tailored to expert, average or beginning gardeners).

• Find out if businesses have products/services that will help gardeners create gifts from their garden (e.g. tools, seeds, etc.), and recommend promoting such items throughout May.

• Look for businesses that are hosting a Mother’s Day event or promotion that has to do with gardening and promote it.

• Host a Web segment on your Web page with cooking demonstrations using ingredients from a local reader/business garden, then ask businesses if they would like to advertise as sponsors of the demonstrations.

• Five million organic gardeners use only all-natural pesticides and fertilizers according to the NGA. The NGA also says organic gardening is likely to increase in the next few years. Be sure to look for businesses carrying organic products that may want to begin advertising or start up an ad campaign.
