In 2010, President Obama launched the America’s Great Outdoors Initiative to “foster innovative, community driven strategies to protect our natural spaces and to reconnect Americans with our great outdoors.”
In that same proclamation, he declared June as Great Outdoors Month, urging all Americans to “explore the great outdoors and to continue our Nation’s tradition of conserving our lands for future generations.” Originating as Great Outdoors Week by President Bill Clinton in 1997, the event was extended to a month by President George W. Bush in 2004.
The possibilities are endless for this month of outdoor opportunity. In addition, June is also National Fishing and Boating Week (June 4-12), the Great American Backyard Campout (June 25) and National Get Outdoors Day (June 11).
