November 15 is America Recycles Day. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, “In 2006, United States residents, businesses, and institutions produced more than 251 million tons of municipal solid waste, which is approximately 4.6 pounds of waste per person per day....[only] 32.5 percent (based on a national average, varies by market) is recovered and recycled or composted," America Recycles Day encourages people to "go green" by recycling and using products made from recycled material.

Ad/Promotion Ideas:
• Create a sig page with a list of things that can and cannot be recycled in your area.

• Organize a contest between local retailers to see who can recycle the most for one week based on poundage. Have the retailers send in pictures of their efforts and give the winning retailer a free ad in the newspaper.

• Produce a “They're Going Green” special section featuring what businesses are doing to recycle or use recycled materials.

• Create a Recycling Tip Of The Week ad series featuring a different business each week leading up to November 15.

Business to contact:
• Electronic and electrical waste facilities
• Recycling organizations
• Businesses that recycle and/or accept items for recycling such as CFLs, plastic bags, batteries, cardboard, paint, shoes etc.
• Restaurants
• Environmental committees
• Search earth911.org to find businesses who offer a recycling service

  1. Our local recycling center has sponsored a halloween coloring page. We took a haunted house image, added another image of trick-or-treaters in the foreground, then placed a recycle bin and sign saying "Please recycle" next to the haunted house. (We used Adobe Illustrator.) A great way to get kids involved!

Also, the advertiser took advantage of a "Full Page Fire Sale" promotion...
